About Us

DYNA-STEM (Discover your Neurodiverse Advantage in STEM) projects focus on assisting neuro-diverse students in navigating and succeeding in STEM education and careers. Through research conducted by Northern Arizona University’s Institute for Human Development, we explore theories and strategies that play a role in neurodivergent learning and student success. While most of our work is on post-secondary education, there is also a focus on the entire educational system, with K-12 and transition to employment being researched as well.

Our neurodiverse STEM students have experienced some of the following successes:

  • Mentorship to undergraduate students by both faculty and neurodiverse graduate students
  • Participating in undergraduate and graduate research projects
  • Participating and presenting at national conferences
  • Obtaining internships in STEM fields

Our universities and community colleges have experienced the following successes:

  • STEM faculty have a greater understanding of how best to develop courses that work for all students and learning styles
  • College and university faculties are participating in workshops on how to better teach their neurodiverse students
  • Administrations are having conversations about including disability in their larger diversity mission

The ultimate goal is for our universities and communities to better understand disability and foster an environment in which neurodiverse students and young professionals succeed in their career goals, creating more inclusive universities and communities.
